Candle Making, A Hot Hobby!

Making Candles Is Easy and Fun

Candle making has been around for millennia.  The remains of clay candle holders, found in Egypt, that date back to 4 BC tells us that the history of  candle making goes back a long, long way.  Of course, at one time, making candles was a necessary requirement if people were to have light at night.  Candles are now used more for luxury and pleasure than for light. Today they serve as decorations, adding wonderful aromas and beautiful, flickering candlelight, just right for romantic dinners and baths.

Nowadays it is a hobby that many people delight in.  Candle making remains a favorite hobby for a variety of reasons.  People produce candles for their own personal use.  Candle making crafts will make great projects to do with older kids.  To start out, it might be a good idea to buy one of the candle making kits at your local candle making supply house or online.

Gift giving is a great reason for making your own candles.  With candles you can give a unique and useful gift to almost everyone.  Making candles for your own personal use or to present as gifts is highly satisfying and easy to do.

A lot of the local craft stores provide all of the tools you will need in order to make your own candles. such as wax, wicks, and  candle molds.  And let's not forget the things that really get your creative juices flowing; color, decorations, and scents.

The first step in candle making is to melt the wax  in a double boiler. This is also a vital safety device   A double boiler is simply one large pot filled with water and placed on the stove top.  Another smaller pot that contains the un-melted wax sits inside theCandle making can give you the material for a lovely centerpiece. larger pot.

Safety should always be first and foremost in your mind when working with hot wax.

Wax will burn if you attempt to melt it without using a double boiler or a similar set up.  Should you spill a pot with hot wax, enough to cover a large patch of skin, wax will keep on burning.  So it is always a good idea to have a large container of cool water, to start cooling the wax down immediately.

There are those who really enjoy making candles so much or get to be so good at it, that they even make  a business out of it.  Some enterprising candle makers have found that selling candles can be a very profitable business.  They have taken a hobby and used their talent to turn it into a rewarding means to earn income.  If you were to enter into the candle making business you would need to buy supplies in bulk at discount prices, which helps the profit margin.  As well as making beautiful candles you need to put time and effort into packaging them attractively.  The driving force behind this is imagination.

The different types of candles that you can make at home are almost limitless. Beeswax, soy, or gel candle making can all be worthwhile to learn to make.  With the different fragrances, colors, and decorations your imagination can really get a work out.  People are always looking for something new when it concerns the fine art of candle making.

And there are types of candles that almost have to be done at home or bought locally, because they don't ship well.  But they are some of the coolest looking candles around.  They are poured and shaped in a large container of water around a center pillar candle.  When you are finished you have a wax sculpture.  They were great fun to make and I actually sold a lot of them from my store.

Making candles is a craft that is limited only by your imagination.
